Coming soon they will be used as the fronts of glass display cases.

Coming soon they will be used instead of basic windows, with "TV" parts hidden in the wall.

Meh.
Remember in Total Recall- that "window" that they had that turned out to be a giant TV wall? I want that.

Though of course I could try and get 4 walls like that in a room (but only if I managed to burn every book in my house).

The mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the fire house.

This is the most well read bunch of nerds ever. I <3 you guys.

Fortunately for us when the apocalypse comes we will all hopefully have some books stored in our brains that we can have pulled from our memories for future generations.

Not useful in a typical living room where rear-mounting is going to be preferred.

This IS cool, but it was done as a laser taser first (fire a smaller charge down laser ionized gas and remotely taser a person using that), but more to the point...

They're shooting lightning at a car.

A car is a Faraday cage. They're lightning proof. It's grounded. Soooooooo, worthless gun unless it's aimed at people?

a car can still get fucked up by lightening...it depends on where it hit and the path it travels to exit...ya won't injure a person, but the car might not run anymore

I've seen this movie:

powerful laser or not so powerful....

http://news.yahoo.com/berkeley-laser-fi ... 00374.html

Quote:
A new laser at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was put through its paces July 20, delivering pulses with a petawatt of power once per second. A petawatt is 1015 watts, or 1,000,000,000,000,000 watts about 400 times as much as the combined instantaneous output of all the world s electric plants.

Each petawatt burst lasts just 40 femtoseconds, or 0.00000000000004 second. Since it fires just one brief pulse per second, the laser s average power is only about 40 watts the same as an incandescent bulb in a reading lamp.

well I guess they're saying that the previous laser that could put out that much, took an hour to fire, where this does it every second

That still doesn't answer the question, like does it destroy planets? Reshape corneas? Cut through metal?

"Average" being the key condition. Especially depending on what it's being compared to. A knockout punch, for example, lasting a split second might have less average power than raindrops hitting the same face over several hours. But which would you rather get hit by? Punch not so powerful? I'll pass.

The goal being to induce fusion using those short-lived but powerful energy bursts. Like a hydrogen bomb using a huge amount of energy to induce an even more crazy large amount. In this case they are using laser energy instead of a fission reaction to get it started.

Pretty cool!

So has fusion like become a real thing now? I thought that was supposedly "impossible" on a small scale.

From what I understand fusion works- it just is negative energy output right now. Nothing useful.

Right, that's what I meant, I remember everyone saying that fusion = "we're spending a shit-ton of energy and not seeing a return on the energy investment" since, well, forever.

So far, yes. Other than H-bombs fusion has been an energy debt effort. But, according to the linked article, our valiant folks at the National Ignition Facility are trying to flip it positive without the bomby effect  Some going so far claiming success within the next 15 years. Who knows? Fascinating, though.

Nasty. Not just artillery jabs and overcuts. But crosses and hooks, too.

No, Dark Matter binds us. It holds the universe together. Technically, we've found the Light Side.

Dark Energy is the force that pushes the Universe apart. THAT is the Dark Side. Haven't found it yet, and I doubt we ever will. Because I have a crazy theory (has to do with Multiverse Theory) of why we're accelerating away from the center of the universe.
