ok here's a couple songs that have recently been remade...are they better/same/worse than the originals...

first up, Time After Time

original by Cyndi Lauper

the remake by quietdrive

next up, Good Times, Bad Times

original by Led Zeppelin

the remake by Godsmack

Quietdrive's is the closest to a remake/new cover. Doesn't really grab me any, and I personally don't think enough time has passed for it to be worth making. Also, wth is Quietdrive?

The Zep cover is nothing more than a coverband cover. I don't care who Godsmack are. Might as well play the original.

Quote:
Quietdrive was the name of the original incarnation of the band - which included members Kevin Truckenmiller, Brandon Lanier, Justin Bonhiver and Droo Hastings. It was created when one day Lanier was driving Bonhiver to his house. Bonhiver was obnoxiously screaming, Lanier told him "BE QUIET! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A QUIETDRIVE!!" They both looked at eachother and knew that was it.

edit: how long should a song sit around before it can be remade btw? the lauper song is 23 yrs old

I've heard the Quietdrive cover a handful of times already...don't much care for it. I suppose it's an alright cover...it's just a shitty song. I find Cyndi Lauper insufferable. As such, I have a bias against the song from the get go.

I'm kinda suprised by the godsmack cover though. I kept waiting for them to gay it up and they never really did. I'm hugely disinterested in their music in general, but I think they did a good job on the song. I think it's really hard to duplicate Zepplin's style, and as such, I didn't really hear it in their cover...whether or not that makes the song good is subjective I think, but in this case, I kinda dig it.

Hi, welcome to wrongsville, population you.

Those two songs are COVERS of original songs that predate my birth, thus illustrating my point.

Superman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_(R.E.M._song)
Higher Ground http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_Ground_(song)

Crap, as it turns out, Higher Ground came out in '73. We'll update the rule to be "Further back than I can remember."

Done and done.

The funny thing is I was actually at the concert in question in the Wikipedia entry where Stipe shot down the girl (they have it listed as a guy) who asked them to play Superman. I went to school with the girl who shouted the request. She felt dumb. End of story.

The only time period when you can't do a cover of a song is when the original is still on the charts. As far as the two songs listed here, the Cyndi Lauper song is one that I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing again. As such, I change the channel when the cover comes on - I haven't even listened to it all the way through. I can still look at it objectively though, and the sound is on par for a guitar-driven cover of a lighter song. I think it's pretty typical of most bands in the "alternative" genre to have one or two of these they could whip out during an encore. The Zeppelin cover is also technically fine, but not something I want to hear on the radio. For me, Zeppelin is one of very few bands that I never get sick of (cept maybe Stairway). I'd just assume listen to the original rather than Godsmack. But if I were a Godsmack fan, this would probably sound hella good to me.

My wife had never heard that Zepplin song before I played these for her... I was in shock. Especially considering I own it on a real disc and used to play them all the time. Hell, I think she even bought me that box set.

LMAO I love hearing NuMetal talk about "I'm never gonna dance again, the way I dance with you." HA HA HA HA

And yeah, if you think I'm going to defend George Michaels you're gonna be waiting a looooooong while. :)

I like it. But then again, I'm a child of the '80 and enjoyed that song way back in the day. I like the rock edge that Seether gave it.
